Power Generation

Avondale Landfill was fully Landfill Directive compliant from day one and through good design and operational practice approx 99.9% of the methane produced within the landfill cells is captured and used to generate electricity which is then distributed to the national grid.

How it works

Avondale landfill is fully lined so gases generated within the landfill cells during decomposition of the waste, are collected, then drawn off via a comprehensive network of pipes to the power generation unit to produce electricity.

Currently the landfill generates and exports 6.6Mw to the grid making it a provider of energy to the nation. approximatley enough to supply 3,000 homes

Who would have thought it?

The waste from your bin could help make the toast in the morning or even heat your house during winter.
